NEW YORK (AP) — Though the fog of time may have clouded certain details, a parade of past scandals that each seized the public’s attention ring familiar to this day.

There’s Lyle and Erik Menendez, privileged sons who offed their parents in their Beverly Hills, California, home in 1989. There’s Jean Harris, the girls’ school headmistress whose lover, celebrity diet doctor Herman Tarnower, was found shot dead after she visited him in 1980, landing

TV Review: ‘Barbara Walters Presents American Scandals’

Barbara Walters clearly isn’t ready to retire, and Investigation Discovery is nothing if not resourceful when it comes to trading off the equity built up by TV news folk. So close on the heels of “Killer Instinct With Chris Hansen” comes “Barbara Walters Presents American Scandals,” a pretty enterprising and ingenious way of repurposing the former ABC News star’s old “get” interviews, in slightly repackaged and updated form. Beginning with JonBenet Ramsey and moving on to O.J. Simpson, the Menendez brothers and Robert Blake, it’s the cable-TV equivalent of using every part of the chicken.

Produced by Lincoln Square Prods. – the more entertainment-oriented production arm of ABC News (although that distinction means less with each passing day) – “American Scandals” makes liberal use of Walters’ hard-earned reputation for landing interviews with high-profile subjects, most of which happened long enough ago as to feel

Monday’s Indian River County jail escape mimics aspects of 2005 breakout

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY ? They differed in age and background, but the five men who escaped from the Indian River County Jail in two separate breakouts had many things in common, according to the details of the incidents.

All five proved to be nimble, crafty, desperate and able to work in the dark.

Sheriff Deryl Loar and corrections staff will continue Friday reviewing the vulnerabilities at the facility that led to two men escaping Monday. Part of their frustration is the pair used the same type of room ? a maintenance room connecting the plumbing and air conditioning systems of the jail ? as the previous escape nearly six years ago.

“I take this personally,” Loar said. “It frustrates me, and it makes me angry. We have highly trained men and women who work

Todd Robbins is a master of macabre, a purveyor of quirk, a performer fascinated with characters who sometimes head down dark, malevolent paths. His interest in this expansive field is the subject of the new Investigation Discovery series True Nightmares, which airs new episodes Wednesdays at 10 p.m.

“I was approached by Discovery Studios because of my background in kind of all kinds of unusual things,” Robbins said recently during a phone interview. “They wanted to focus on something related to the sideshow, and the irony of it was that the project we put together, they couldn’t sell it because everyone said it was too dark. Barbara Walters dishes on her ‘Scandals’

Barbara Walters plays to her journalistic strengths in her new series — revisiting 10 high-profile crime/celebrity stories she’s covered in her long, distinguished career. While “Barbara Walters Presents American Scandals,” premiering Nov. 2 (10 p.m.) on ID, represents Walters’ move into cable, she’s still working at ABC: her annual “Ten Most Fascinating People” special will air later this year.

“We didn’t want to do a ‘Where are they now?’ kind of thing [with ‘American Scandals’] but more of what happened to some of these people?” says Walters, 86. “What are they doing now? Are they still in prison? Why have they survived in our minds?”

“American Scandals” includes fresh interviews, conducted by Walters, along with her commentary on and insights into each case. “We went back to these people and asked them, ‘What would you have done differently? Could you have avoided prison?,’” she

TRUE NIGHTMARES Premieres with Host Todd Robbins Tonight on Investigation Discovery!

Tonight, Investigation Discovery premieres an all-new series, TRUE NIGHTMARES, just in time to put a scare into viewers for the Halloween season. True stories of murder and mayhem morph into urban legends like the boogeyman or the monster under the bed – haunting our childhoods and scaring us throughout our lives. TRUE NIGHTMARES brings to life the true stories that spawned these hair-raising tales, proving once again that truth will always be scarier than fiction.

Acting as an on-screen narrator, Robbins appears in and out of scenes, using his ominous tone and eerie charisma to masterfully weave together three stories each hour, playfully hinting that there is always more to the story to
