Discovery Communications 2016 Upfront Highlights

We covered Discovery Communications’ 2016 upfront highlights in Cablefax Daily from Discovery’s digital arm, Discovery Channel and TLC. The following are additional highlights from Thursday’s announcements, from Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, Science Channel, Velocity and American Heroes Channel.

Investigation Discovery announced 13 new and 16 returning series. Highlights from the new crop include “Hard Evidence: OJ Is Innocent,” a mini-series premiering early ’17 from exec prod Martin Sheen that questions what’s known about the infamous trial; “Murder Chose Me” features Shreveport, LA, homicide detective Rod Demery as he catches criminals; and “The Detectives Club: New Orleans” features a group of retired detectives from the city who discuss their most haunting cases.

Top announcements from Animal Planet include a new programming event “Animal Planet Presents,” which will showcase specials and documentary films from top filmmakers like 2016 Slamdance Film Fest winner “Million Dollar Duck”; new series such as “Texas Vets,” following the lives

Upfronts ’16: Discovery unveils 2016/17 programming slates

Discovery Communications is targeting a millennial audience with a web-native network focused on science and exploration and featuring a host of VR projects, the company revealed at its Upfront presentation in New York this week.

The “Seeker” net promises to premiere more than 250 videos of “socially-driven content” each month, and will live across multiple digital platforms as well as the Seeker.com platform, launching in May.

Programming includes the ‘Seeker VR’ strand, which will feature a series of short-form VR docs immersing audiences in the translocation of rhinos in Nepal. Another VR experience titled Edge of the Earth 360 is a VR trip 100,000 feet in the air via weather balloon, and will be debuting in May.

Meanwhile, ‘Seeker Docs’ includes a slate of short-form docs that feature “incredible people leading impactful lives,” while ‘Seeker Live’ consists of a week of livestreams in May. Featured participants are Trace Dominguez and Amy Shira Teitel, who will deliver live science

Discovery Greenlights Unabomber Drama ‘Manifesto’ From Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti

Discovery Channel has given the green light to Manifesto, a scripted series from Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti’s Trigger Street Productions that will focus on the FBI’s efforts to bring down “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski.

The series, which was previously announced when it went into development, will trace how FBI agent Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald took a radical new approach to intelligence gathering during his investigation into the case. Because of his training in linguistics, Fitzgerald believed that the key to unlocking the true identity of the Unabomber would be found in the language of The Manifesto, a detailed account of some of Kaczynski’s plots. 

The pilot was written by Andrew Sodroski, with Spacey, Brunetti and Troy Searer executive producing. John Goldwyn is executive producer for Discovery. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

The green light comes amid a renaissance for true-crime programming, as shows such as HBO’s The Jinx: The Life and Deaths

Missing Newtown Man’s Case to be Featured on Investigation Discovery’s ‘Disappeared’

NEWTOWN, CT– The case of missing Newtown man Robert Hoagland will be featured on Disappeared TV show, according to Inquisitr.com.

The Investigation Discovery network is brining back the series after a three-year hiatus. The show focuses on unsolved missing persons cases and will feature the missing Newtown man.

According to police, Robert Hoagland, then 50, was last seen at 5:30 a.m. on July 28, 2013 at Mobil gas station. Police said he is a white male, 6’ tall weighing approximately 175 lbs. He is bald and has blue eyes. Robert was last seen wearing a white T-Shirt and khaki shorts.

Hoagland’s son was the last one to see him the morning before he went missing. Hoagland reportedly left his car, wallet, driver’s license, passport, credit cards, cell phone and the shoes
