Politically motivated? FBI investigating attack on Rand Paul

Does an attack on a Republican senator reflect a danger from the Left, the nuttiness of one man, or a run-of-the-mill neighborhood dispute getting out of control? Rand Paul suffered more serious injuries than first announced in an assault perpetrated by his neighbor, retired physician and inventor Rene Boucher. At first, his office assured reporters that Paul was only slightly injured, but breathing difficulties revealed that the senator from Kentucky suffered five broken ribs — no small matter:

Rand Paul was recovering Sunday from five broken ribs, including three displaced fractures, after he was assaulted by a neighbor who tackled him from behind at the senator’s Kentucky home, officials said.

Senior Adviser Doug Stafford said it is unclear when the Republican senator will return to work since he is in “considerable pain” and has difficulty getting around, including flying. Stafford said this type of injury is marked by severe

The Seeds of Rage Bloom With Menace in ‘An Impending Rupture of the Belly’

Ever had a neighbor you just couldn’t stand? Was his yard too messy, or too neat? Did he paint his house fluorescent yellow? Did his backyard garden encroach on your property line by a foot? Did you ultimately harbor thoughts of murder? Well, of course you did.

We all have those thoughts flit through our heads, but we ignore them, unlike Clay, the lead character in An Impending Rupture of the Belly by Matt Pelfrey, now at None Too Fragile Theater. Clay and his wife Terri are expecting their first child, but terrors are roaming free in the world and Clay is feeling beset on all sides by potential and imagined disasters involving riots, people spraying Dodger Stadium with smallpox from a crop duster, bird flu, you name it.

Trying to slow his roll, Terri suggests that Clay launch his campaign against looming worldwide holocausts by starting small: convincing their neighbor Doug

The Mysterious Case of the Glut in True-Crime TV

The crime rate in the United States remains considerably lower than it was a few decades ago, but not on your television. True-crime programs are seemingly everywhere these days, with early June bringing yet another new batch. As with zombie stories and scripted police procedurals, it seems as if this genre has no saturation point.

On Friday HLN, a channel in the CNN family, began “Beyond Reasonable Doubt,” a show that focuses on cases in which forensic science provided a breakthrough. On Monday TV One adds “#Murder,” featuring cases involving social media, to its “True Crime Monday” lineup. The longtime leader in the true-crime field, Investigation Discovery, goes to Las Vegas for “Sin City Justice,” which begins Thursday and promises a real-time format to tell crime stories “with unprecedented access and unfiltered emotions.”

These and other newcomers are adding to what already seems like a glut. The basic-cable band is full of
