Momentum, Blackfin renew copro deal; Anna Snead named development head

Momentum Content has renewed its overall co-production deal with Blackfin, one year after its initial launch.

Christina Douglas exited Discovery Communications-owned Investigation Discovery last January to lead the firm, which specializes in creating, developing and producing crime formats and unscripted programming. She is currently based out of Blackfin’s New York offices, working closely alongside CEO Geno McDermott.

“We’ve had a fast start out of the gate thanks in part to our incredible partner Blackfin,” said Douglas, in a statement.  “It’s been an honor to work with Geno McDermott who stands out among the crowd as a true visionary.”

Going into its second year, Momentum has recruited another former ID Exec. Anna Snead, who has been with Momentum as a consultant since June, has been named head of development.

Gerard John Schaefer became known as the ‘Killer Cop’ and may have murdered dozens of women

This week Married with Secrets spotlights ‘Killer Cop’ and suspected serial killer Gerard John Schaefer, who brought darkness and murder to the Sunshine State.

Schaefer was a Sheriff’s Deputy in Martin County, Florida, through the late 1960s and early 1970s, where he lived with his wife. He first came to attention of his superiors on July 21, 1972, when he abducted two teenage girls and took them to some woods. There he threatened to kill them or prostitute them, before being called away by an alert on his police radio. Luckily the girls managed to escaoe and went to the nearest police station, which happened to be the one Schaefer operated out of.

When Investigation Discovery (ID) television network wanted to do a documentary-style program about the 2008 murder of Pleasanton couple Ernest Scherer Jr. and Charlene Abendroth, they contacted the local newspaper.

The Pleasanton Weekly journalists covered the case from the discovery of the bodies through the sentencing of their murderer — their son Ernest Scherer III — three years later.

Because of the existence of the paper and the constancy of leadership, we were able to provide credible information and historical context to the “Gambling With Death” episode on ID’s “Married With Secrets” series.

A lot has changed since 2008, in Pleasanton, in the newspaper industry and at the Pleasanton Weekly.

In 2008, our division had two newspapers, four websites, twice as much office space and three times the staff. Technology, though, has disrupted the business models for media and its main source of revenue: local businesses.

Family of Elaine O’Hara hit out at TV show about her killing at the hands of Graham Dwyer

The family of Elaine O’Hara have hit out at an American TV show that documents her killing at the hands of Graham Dwyer.

Extremely graphic details of the sadistic murder have been reconstructed for a major crime network in the US.

The 2015 case which gripped the nation of Ireland was broadcast in an episode of Married With Secrets which appears on the Investigation Discovery Channel.
