Husband-and-Wife Private Detectives Investigate the Murder of Their Own Daughter

Jessie Whitehouse was shot in her home last fall, and IMPD hasn’t yet publicly identified a suspect.

No one loved a good murder mystery more than Jessie Whitehouse. It was in the blonde-haired, blue-eyed, 30-year-old paralegal’s blood. Raised by a lawman-turned–private eye, and the granddaughter of a legendary Indianapolis Police Department detective, Jessie was weaned on the gritty details of the city’s most notorious homicide investigations. Her stepfather, Virgil Vandagriff, was a Marion County sheriff’s deputy who worked on nearly every bold-faced crime case in Indy for the last four decades, many of them known by shorthand titles: The Speedway Bomber. The Burger Chef Murders.

Need a good night’s sleep? Help is not on the way. Because truth is often more chilling than fiction, and fear can keep you up at night.

Take the case of Wallace Souza, who in 2009 hosted a Brazilian TV crime show called, “Canal Livre.” Souza had the good fortune of receiving anonymous phone tips alerting him and the TV station of upcoming murders. He confounded local authorities by getting a TV news truck to the scene of the attacks before they happened and broadcasting live coverage which, of course, boosted his TV ratings, CNN reported at the time.

How the unlikely events surrounding Souza unfolded, along with the unusual twist that ends his story, are re-enacted on this weekend’s edition of Investigation Discovery’s “True Nightmares,” a weekly series in its second season of presenting gruesome stories of murder and mayhem based on real events.

Todd Robbins is a master of macabre, a purveyor of quirk, a performer fascinated with characters who sometimes head down dark, malevolent paths. His interest in this expansive field is the subject of the new Investigation Discovery series True Nightmares, which airs new episodes Wednesdays at 10 p.m.

“I was approached by Discovery Studios because of my background in kind of all kinds of unusual things,” Robbins said recently during a phone interview. “They wanted to focus on something related to the sideshow, and the irony of it was that the project we put together, they couldn’t sell it because everyone said it was too dark. Investigation Discovery’s ‘True Nightmares’ Puts a ‘Twilight Zone’ Twist on True Crimes

Investigation Discovery debuts a new series this Wednesday with a new twist on the true crime genre. True Nightmares features Todd Robbins narrating three tales of criminal mischief in the style of Rod Serling’s supernatural fictional series, The Twilight Zone. Like Serling, Robbins’ narration is interwoven with the stories in True Nightmares, as he appears throughout each vignette to offer his dramatic narration on camera, popping in and out of scenes, teasing viewers on what is yet to come.

Robbins is best known for his fascination with sideshow amusements and oddities, including bizarre magic and the darker side of Coney Island. His background prior to hosting True Nightmares includes traveling circuses, working with mediums, playing ragtime piano, and the seedy underworld of con artist scams. He’s been a consultant on many TV shows and movies for his expertise in oddities and carny culture, and he was featured in the
