Scorned LAPD Detective Murdered Her Ex-Boyfriend’s Wife – and Got Away With It for Decades

In the decades after 29-year-old Sherri Rae Rasmussen was found bludgeoned and fatally shot in February 1986, her family never gave up hope of finding her killer.

Los Angeles police believed the nursing administrator died during a violent robbery and home invasion of the condo she shared with her new husband. But Rasmussen’s relatives suspected her spouse’s ex-girlfriend: LAPD officer Stephanie Lazarus.

Lazarus, Rasmussen’s parents said, had threatened Rasmussen at her workplace before she died, telling her, “If I can’t have John, nobody can.”

How L.A. police eventually traced the murder to one of their own is the focus of Monday night’s episode of People Magazine Investigates on Investigation Discovery. An exclusive preview appears above.

During the years the slaying remained unsolved, Lazarus thrived, becoming one of only two detectives in the LAPD’s elite art theft unit. But in 2009, cold-case investigators reopened their inquiry and got a break when they applied DNA

DNA test says Singer slayer was Hispanic

By Diana McFarland

Managing editor

The man who killed Carrie Singer was not her boyfriend but an unknown Hispanic man.

That’s the conclusion presented last week by the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office concerning the unsolved 2004 murder of Singer, 28, whose body was dumped in a farm field off Blount’s Corner Road.

The revelation was part of the Discovery Channel’s series, “The Killing Fields,” which will feature the Singer’s unsolved murder this season.

Isle of Wight County Sheriff Mark Marshall said his investigators had tools available to them now that did not exist 13 years ago — namely DNA phenotyping that can pinpoint a person’s ancestry, coloring and some semblance of facial features based on DNA evidence.

That same technology was also able to eliminate Singer’s boyfriend, Robert Dezern, as a suspect. Dezern died in 2013.

Investigators charge former boyfriend in connection with woman’s 2005 disappearance

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) –

Investigators have charged a woman’s former boyfriend in connection with her disappearance in 2005.

North Charleston police officials say Garland Eugene Lankford has been charged with obstruction of justice in connection with Brandy Hanna’s disappearance. A judge set his bond for that charge at $10,000. Bond has not been set for a child support charge.

Lankford was Hanna’s boyfriend at the time of Hanna’s disappearance.

Hanna was last seen in 2005 after leaving work at Alex’s Restaurant on Dorchester Road.

An affidavit states Lankford provided false and misleading statements regarding Hanna who was reported missing on May 23, 2005 and officially declared deceased on Aug. 26, 2013.

Police say Hanna is believed to to be the victim of a homicide.

This past summer, Investigation Discovery aired Hanna’s story as an episode of the series “Disappeared.”

The network sent a crew
