Scorned LAPD Detective Murdered Her Ex-Boyfriend’s Wife – and Got Away With It for Decades

In the decades after 29-year-old Sherri Rae Rasmussen was found bludgeoned and fatally shot in February 1986, her family never gave up hope of finding her killer.

Los Angeles police believed the nursing administrator died during a violent robbery and home invasion of the condo she shared with her new husband. But Rasmussen’s relatives suspected her spouse’s ex-girlfriend: LAPD officer Stephanie Lazarus.

Lazarus, Rasmussen’s parents said, had threatened Rasmussen at her workplace before she died, telling her, “If I can’t have John, nobody can.”

How L.A. police eventually traced the murder to one of their own is the focus of Monday night’s episode of People Magazine Investigates on Investigation Discovery. An exclusive preview appears above.

During the years the slaying remained unsolved, Lazarus thrived, becoming one of only two detectives in the LAPD’s elite art theft unit. But in 2009, cold-case investigators reopened their inquiry and got a break when they applied DNA

Carlo Lamarr-Marquis Owens, who is spending life in prison for the murders

Tonight’s installment of Detective on Investigation Discovery probes the double murder of a couple at Ohio State University in Columbus.

The episode, titled Campus Killer, pieces together the fateful night in January 1999 when Loretta Long and her boyfriend, Patrick Pryor, planned to watch a movie at her campus apartment.

A roommate later discovered their bloody bodies, which had been gunned down.

Police’s investigation of the killings apparently accelerated after they found out Loretta was being stalked.

Long, 21, and Pryor, 20, both died from multiple gunshot wounds. Police were initially baffled by the incident, as drugs didn’t appear to be involved and a motive wasn’t quickly established.

“This thing is just so incredibly horrific because it was so off the wall; it

The episode is titled Angel Doe, the name Raysate was known by before she was identified. In it Douglas is determined to find out why her death wasn’t reported and how she ended up being neglected.

Raysate’s body was found on September 9, 2001, showing she had suffered bruising and was malnourished before she died.

She had been killed after sustaining blunt trauma to the head. An autopsy reportedly showed she had suffered from physical abuse for a long period of time.

Is Murder Chose Me real? Is it a reality show? Detective Demery …

Is Murder Chose Me real 2

It’s hardly unusual for a reality TV show to have to fight back against claims that part or all of the show is fake. But Investigation Discovery’s Murder Chose Me is hardly a typical reality show–in fact, while it does use elements of reality TV, the show is more closely related to a true crime documentary. With one small difference, of course: where a typical documentary focuses on real-life interviews and dramatizes only a few minutes of the events in question, Murder Chose Me is part of ID’s growing stable of real-life crime shows that instead emphasize the dramatization. The result is a hybrid format popularized by Homicide Hunter and I Am Homicide, one where the detective who actually solved the crime narrates the events as they unfold.

Who is ex-homicide detective Rod Demery from Murder Chose Me?

Ex-homicide detective and Murder Chose Me host Rod Demery

Tonight’s Murder Chose Me on Investigation Discovery follows former homicide detective Rod Demery as he probes the murder of a young woman.

But it also features a behind-the-scenes look into the production of the Investigation Discovery show, featuring interviews with the cast and crew.

Right at the center of that is Demery himself, with the show revolving around cases he had tracking criminals on the loose in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Demery has a personal interest in pursuing killers, following the murder of his own mother when he was just three years old.

Moreover, Demery’s brother was convicted in a separate murder case and received a sentence of life in prison.

With those incidents framing his life, Demery later decided to enter the police force.

He subsequently served for nearly 15 years as a homicide detective in Shreveport, considered to be one of the most dangerous

MURDER CHOSE ME Detective Rod Demery reveals the personal toll his professional life took

Is Rod Demery married 1

Detective Rod Demery of Investigation Discovery’s Murder Chose Me never tried to hide the fact that his work as a homicide detective was always the biggest part of his life. His fourteen years with the Shreveport PD resulted in perhaps the most impressive success rate in the entire country, but the pace Rod maintained often left others feeling put out. “Demery’s impressive clearance rate,” ID explained when setting up the premise of Murder Chose Me, “coupled with his fierce determination and no-holds-barred approach to get a confession, made him a legend in the department–but also a bit of an outsider….Friends, family and love interests all found themselves playing second fiddle to his detective work.”
