I Turned in My Serial Killer Father: How April Balascio Discovered Her Dad Murdered at Least 5

One day in 1980, when April Balascio was 11 years old, her father, Edward Wayne Edwards, woke up the household and told his wife and kids to start packing. They were leaving Watertown, Wisconsin, where they’d lived for about a year — and they were leaving immediately.

The scenario wasn’t unfamiliar: The Edwards family was nomadic, roaming from town to town every six months to a year, at their father’s whim, and often without warning.

“He’d tell us the we had to move in secret because he was protecting us, because there were people who wanted to hurt him or us,” Balascio, now 48, tells PEOPLE.

It would be decades before Balascio, beginning with her own online investigation in March 2009, discovered it was her father who was actually running from the law — that the man who walked her down the aisle had also murdered at least five people.

Thanks in part to

Gerard John Schaefer became known as the ‘Killer Cop’ and may have murdered dozens of women

This week Married with Secrets spotlights ‘Killer Cop’ and suspected serial killer Gerard John Schaefer, who brought darkness and murder to the Sunshine State.

Schaefer was a Sheriff’s Deputy in Martin County, Florida, through the late 1960s and early 1970s, where he lived with his wife. He first came to attention of his superiors on July 21, 1972, when he abducted two teenage girls and took them to some woods. Gerald Patrick LewisGerald Patrick Lewis

Gerald Patrick Lewis raped and murdered several woman

This week Evil Lives Here examines the case of serial killer and rapist Gerald Patrick Lewis, who managed to live a bit of a double life, fooling even his brother Sean.

Lewis killed several women over a period of ten years, in both Georgia and Alabama. His victims included Peggy Lynn Grimes who was 8 months pregnant at the time, though it took five years to find her body after she went missing.

Other victims included 32-year-old Kathleen Bracken who was raped and then stabbed to death in the Twilite Motel and 22-year-old Misty McGugin.

It was his murder of Bracken that led directly to his arrest and he went on to confess to several killings, leading investigators to the site of McGugin’s body. He also described several other

Killer Who Murdered Young Alaskan Family in 1982 Has Never Been Caught

It’s been 35 years since the Coulthurst family and a group of young deckhands were killed on their fishing boat in the tiny Alaskan fishing village of Craig. Although it’s clear the victims were killed by gunfire, questions still surround the homicide — like who did it and why.

On Monday night’s episode of People Magazine Investigates on Investigation Discovery, Dave Freeman, who grew up with Jerome Keown and Dave Moon, — two of the massacre’s eight victims — said, “The shock of losing everyone really tore up our town. They all had their whole lives in front of them, and they were just blown away. It’s just such a shame and tragic for no reason.”

The slaying of skipper Mark Coulthurst and his pregnant wife, Irene, both 28, along with their children Kimberly, 5, and John, 4, and four deckhands — Chris Heyman, 18; and Keown, Moon and

How a Killer Massacred an Entire Family on a Fishing Boat in Alaska — and Was Never Caught

The killer moved in plain sight on the foggy morning of Sept. 6, 1982, in the tiny southeast Alaskan fishing village of Craig.

Hours after shooting his eight victims with what police believe was a .22-caliber pistol or rifle, he fired up the engines on the 58-foot fishing boat Investor, waving nonchalantly to a nearby skipper as he moved the vessel — with his victims’ bodies inside — to a secluded bay a mile outside of town.

He motored back to the weather-beaten docks in the Investor’s skiff, returning the next afternoon with a can of gasoline to set the craft ablaze before speeding back to town and then vanishing. Authorities would later describe the suspect as a white male in his early 20s with a pockmarked complexion.

“When I got there [to the boat], black smoke was coming out of the wheelhouse, but there was nobody on deck,” former Craig police

Inside the Hunt For the Golden State Serial Killer Who Killed 12 and Raped 45 in California

It was around 6:30 a.m., on October 5, 1976, when Jane Sandler heard footsteps running toward her bedroom in her ranch style house in Citrus Heights, California, a middle class suburb of Sacramento.

Thinking it was her husband, who had just left for work for the day, Sandler, a 30-year-old Air Force reserve captain, said, “What did you forget?”

That’s when she looked up and saw an intruder wearing a black ski mask shining a flashlight in her face. As she clutched her three-year-old son next to her, he put a large knife to her chest and muttered, “Shut up, I will kill you.”

The intruder quickly tied their hands, blindfolded them, and tied her feet using sheets from her bed.

“He had this ritual of ripping and tearing these sheets,” Sandler, now 71 and the author of Frozen in Fear: A True Story

Killer Miles Evans two giveaway signs he murdered stepdaughter …

Convicted murderer Miles Evans tried to fool investigators with an emotional plea following the disappearance of his nine-year-old stepdaughter, but two key blunders blew his cover.

Zoe Evans went missing from her home in Warminster, UK, on January 11, 1997, and according to a new documentary, the televised police appeal Evans gave alongside her mother Paula three days later was ladened with giveaway signs that outed him as a liar.

Attempts to deflect attention away from himself backfired, and his body language gave a key indication that Evans, a Private in the Royal Logistics Corps, was responsible for the young girl’s disappearance, Daily Mail reported.
