Angie Zapata Tragedy Goes National on Investigation Discovery’s Murder Calls

The late Angie Zapata. A video and more below.

The 2008 murder of Angie Zapata, a transgender teen from Greeley, stands as both a horrifying example of violence targeting the LGBTQ community and a precedent-setting case for federal hate crime laws. See a preview below.

Former Westword staffer Melanie Asmar, who currently covers Denver Public Schools for the education news website Chalkbeat, dug deep into Angie’s story, live blogging the April 2009 trial of Allen Andrade, the man who killed her, and contextualizing the case and its importance in the May 2009 article “Who Was Angie Zapata? Her Murderer’s Trial Didn’t Tell the Whole Story.”

As Asmar wrote, those

Kayla Berg case gets national attention in cable documentary

ANTIGO, Wis. (WSAW) — A nearly 8 year old missing persons case received national attention Sunday after being featured during a cable documentary.

Investigation Discovery aired an episode of “Disappeared” highlighting the case of missing Antigo teen– Kayla Berg. She was reported missing in August 2009.

Kayla was given a ride to a house on East Wausau Avenue by Kevin Kielcheski– a friend of her brother. It was reportedly to see an ex-boyfriend Miguel Marrero. But Kayla’s friends said Marrero had moved, and Kayla knew that.

Kayla’s mother, Hope Sprenger told NewsChannel 7 she wasn’t sure how her daughter’s story was selected, but did say she had written into the show a few years ago.

The episode highlighted the amount of resources investigators from Langlade County have devoted to the case. Including seeking help from the National Guard in March 2010 to

Arrest Made In Decade long Cold Case After Podcast Renews National Attention

“Up and Vanished” certainly isn’t the first podcast of its kind. When people think “true crime” and “audio,” naturally minds jump to runaway hit “Serial,” which followed the disputed conviction of Adnan Syed. The public’s hunger for true crime, meted out in weekly installments, was evident, and soon other shows followed: “Accused,” “Someone Knows Something,” “In the Dark.” Many focused on long-cold cases.

The national show featuring Shreveport’s finest is on – KTBS.com – Shreveport, LA News, Weather and Sports

If there is a part of the world that has not heard about Shreveport yet, they are about to get a year long dose about this place.

It all has to do with one man and his mission to make murderers pay for their crimes and give families closure and it will all be broadcast on Investigation Discovery’s new show called “Murder Chose Me.”

Last week you could say Hollywood landed in Shreveport’s Robinson Film Center.  Actors and ID network Executive Producer Lorna Thomas and the show’s producer  Todd Moss were in town privately promoting the show that deals with the real life murder mysteries solved by former Shreveport homicide detective Rod Demery.

“The thing that appealed to us about Rod was his personal story…what motivates him to solve homicides. I think it’s unique and that was something that we were looking to bring to our cast of characters on ID,” said Thomas.
