ID partners with People on social justice

The goal is to inspire viewers to take action and make a difference in the lives of others. Also, as part of the partnership, People will co-host the annual Inspire a Difference honours event in New York on 2 November, to recognise the work of three celebrity honourees and one everyday hero for their commitment to raising awareness and providing resources and education to victims of crime and social injustice. Past celebrity honourees have included Angie Harmon, Joy Behar, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Chenoweth, Rosario Dawson and Dave Navarro.

ID will leverage the People brand by asking its readers to nominate an everyday hero in the magazine’s 28 August issue. One reader will be honoured in an autumn issue of People, and their chosen charity will receive a $5,000 donation from ID.

Mary Kay Letourneau Sent Notes to Vili Fualaau in Jail – People

During Mary Kay Letourneau‘s seven-and-a-half year prison sentence for raping her then-12-year-old student Vili Fualauu, she was required to have no contact with him.

But she did anyway, using at least one highly unusual method, according to the Mary Kay Letourneau episode of Barbara Walters Presents American Scandals (available online now).

In an exclusive clip, author Gregg Olsen, who has covered the case, details Letourneau’s clandestine communications to Fualaau.

“Mary stayed in touch with Vili in a lot of different ways,” Olsen tells Walters. “One way was to send out messages in the milk bottles that she was — [producing] milk in prison for her babies, so she put little notes in the caps and they went out.”

“She sent audiotapes out,” Olsen explains. “She had prisoners make phone calls

PEOPLE, Freeform partner to develop empowering TV movies

PEOPLE magazine has locked down its next television venture!

EW’s sister publication is partnering with Freeform to develop scripted, original television movies featuring empowering human interest stories, the network announced Wednesday. Co-produced by Everywhere Studios, these movies will draw upon PEOPLE’s franchises like Heroes Among Us that tell stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

“It was a big pastime in Hollywood to go through the pages of PEOPLE magazine and tear out the stories and then go get the life rights to these people. So now we’re doing that ourselves,” says PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle.

PEOPLE Deputy Editor Dan Wakeford adds, “Instead of sitting in meetings saying, ‘That would make a great movie,’ and letting somebody else make it, we’re going to start being involved in that process.”

The Time Inc. publication’s three big pillars are celebrity, crime, and human interest, and the first two have already found their place on the small screen. In
