ROMEO AND JULIET Now on the Road in Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival's WillPower Tour

From the page and to the stage, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet launches Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s annual WillPower Tour which will perform for 50 schools across Pennsylvania and New Jersey through November 17.

Now in its 18th year, the WillPower Tour has served more than 174,000 students in 40 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties as well as New Jersey and Delaware. The tour includes a professionally directed 80-minute production with set and costumes, trained actor-teachers, and quality curriculum through workshops and other sessions with the students.

“The live theatre experience is the perfect complement for educators and students when incorporated before, during, or after reading the text of Romeo and Juliet in the classroom,” says Jill Arington, PSF Education Director.

Review: ‘The Tempest’ at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company

Shakespeare in the park is a long-held American tradition. From venues in places such as New York City’s Central Park and Washington, DC’s Carter Barron Amphitheater, watching the Bard’s works under the stars is a summertime treat. Since 2003, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (CSC) has produced their version of that pastime, “Shakespeare in the Ruins” at Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park in Ellicott City, MD. Their latest in that venue, The Tempest, is a top-flight production with a sterling cast and direction by Lizzi Albert.

Shakespeare derived the plot, we think, from an account of the shipwreck of the Sea-Venture in 1609 near Bermuda. The fictional island in The Tempest is set somewhere off the coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean. That island, in the story, was ruled by the exiled Duke of Milan,

Review: ‘The Fantasticks’ at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company

The characters in the oldie and much appreciated allegorical goodie The Fantasticks (The off-Broadway incarnation ran for 42 years, and it is reportedly the World’s most performed musical) find out that life is a series of hard lessons, taught through the passage of seasons. With lyrics and book by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, and as directed by Chesapeake Shakespeare Company’s (CSC) Curt L. Tofteland, The Fantasticks is a dazzling night of musical theater.

Review: “Romeo and Juliet” at The Maryland Shakespeare Players …

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, The Maryland Shakespeare Players’ Romeo and Juliet, expertly directed by Vera Belaia, was a fantastic voyage into both Shakespeare’s tale of forbidden love, and a display of great, unadulterated acting by a vibrant, young cast. In Belaia’s re-imagining, most of the population has died from a frightful disease, and the Montagues and Capulets are two warring clans. Staged in a three-quarter thrust with a minimalist set, this production had everything right, from Chris Wong and Cameron Smith’s superior use of lighting, to Anders Tighe’s fight choreography, to Ben Strobel and Terps Racing’s menacing looking stage daggers. Belaia’s production was that rare show with no average performances; from the blocking to the use of the stage to the emotional tones that needed to be played, Romeo and Juliet earned the standing ovation it received at night’s end.
