Macin Smith search yields no direct leads despite determined group of volunteers

Handfuls of locals and out-of-towners who were otherwise strangers came together early Saturday morning with one common goal: find Macin Smith.

Or, at least, some kind of trace of him.

Whether they had to travel 10 minutes or more than 1,800 miles from their homes to help search for Macin in two key desert areas, the missing young man’s family asked for help and it came.

Macin Smith family gives back to volunteer in a big way

At first, TaeLynn Johnson was merely a stranger to the Smith clan.

But after stumbling upon a Facebook page established to “Help Find Macin Smith,” Johnson observed, from afar in Idaho, the story of the missing St. George teen as it unfolded.

Johnson watched Macin’s mother, Tracey Bratt-Smith, share photos and information about Macin, including updates regarding search efforts, and she began to feel drawn to his case.

So drawn, in fact, that she eventually reached out to the Smith family to offer her skills and support free of charge. Since then, Johnson has become one of the page’s main administrators, controlling much of the content and interacting with its nearly 44,300 members.

ST. GEORGE, Utah, May 29, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The mother of missing St. George teen Macin Smith is offering heartfelt words of advice to parents this Memorial Day.

“Hug your kids,” Tracey Bratt-Smith said. “Be patient when they push you to your limits. Life is short.”

Bratt-Smith made the comments on a social media page dedicated to Macin’s return late last week.

Macin, now 19, walked away from his family’s St. George home in September 2015. He hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Some speculate Macin left due to family strife. Others believe he may have met with foul play.

Smith’s story was recently broadcast nationwide on

Exclusive: Mom addresses questions after possible Macin Smith sightings in California

On Monday, Bratt-Smith wrote about a live Q and A Sunday night on Facebook held to discuss Macin’s case. Her post covers some of the topics people are asking the most questions about. Some of the subjects she covers are below:

When exactly Macin left, and where he grew up:
Macin did have hours of a head start when he left on Sept 1. 2015. It would have been from 7:40 a.m. (we assumed he was at school), and Darrin contacted me between 3:30 and 4 p.m. I believe. We could not have predicted he was missing, truly missing, until later that evening.

Macin lived in Canada from ninth-11th grades in Okotoks, Alberta. Prior to that he was raised in Saratoga Springs, Utah. He started kindergarten and attended school through eighth grade in the Saratoga Springs area which is right by Lehi, for those of you unfamiliar with where that is located in Utah County.
