New Baltimore couple’s murder subject of ‘Deadly Women’ episode

A young woman’s role in the horrific murders of a New Baltimore couple was the subject of an Investigation Discovery episode last week.

Samantha Bachynski’s involvement in the deaths of Scott and Melissa Berels were the topic of the ID channel’s “Deadly Women” series, which was set to air at 10 p.m. Friday.

Bachynski was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and several other charges, along with Patrick Selepak, for the 2006 slayings of the Berels, both 27, in their home. Melissa Berels had befriended Selepak, who was the leader of a crime spree with Bachynski that also included the murder of a 53-year-old man in Genesee County in the days following the murders of the Berels.

Selepak first fatally strangled Melissa Berels, who was pregnant, and then with Bachynski’s help tortured Scott Berels before strangling him. Bachynski injected bleach into Scott Berels.

In the weeks before the murder, she helped Selepak rob

Police Officer’s 2002 Toms River Murder Spree Subject Of TV Documentary

TOMS RIVER, NJ — It was a rampage that rattled Ocean County to the core. Five people killed, a police chief shot, a man on the run for 12 hours, and a suicide to end it.

The murders of five of his neighbors and the shooting of his boss by Seaside Heights Police Officer Edward Lutes Jr. in Toms River in the spring of 2002 — on the heels of one just a couple of months prior where another Toms River man, retired police officer John Mabie, killed four people — left Toms River and the community at large grasping for understanding.

Now, 14 years after those killings, the story of Lutes’ killing spree is the focus of an Investigation Discovery episode, “Fear Thy Neighbor: Daddy’s Got A Gun.”

Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, said the episode includes interviews with Capts. Joseph Mitchell and Vincent

More than 20 years ago, Sheila Janutolo was married and raising a family with Jim Cruz, who worked as a truck driver in his home town. She had no idea that during his night trips, he was targeting females

Three local homicides from 2002 were the subject of “Buried Alive,” a Vanity Fair Confidential TV show that aired Monday night on true-crime channel Investigation Discovery.

Locals will remember the names Forrest “Butch” Bowyer, 54; Brett Bowyer, 12; Thurman Ray Ratliff, 68; and Katherine Combs Ratliff, 62. The latter three were killed within three weeks of each other.

The documentary-style TV show on one of Discovery’s featured channels featured the Ratliff’s daughter, Katrina Ryan, telling the story of her parents’ murders that occurred on Jan. 30, 2002, in Opelika.

Pulitzer Prize winning author Buzz Bissinger, who wrote “Friday Night Lights” and was identified as a contributing editor for Vanity Fair, narrates the episode.

It started off with Ryan describing a normal morning in which she always called her mom at 8 a.m. That morning there was no answer, she said.

After several calls and no answers, Ryan drove to her parents’ house. She found the
