A Look Back at the Scott Peterson Murder Trial: 15 Years Later

Nearly 15 years after the disappearance of Laci Peterson in Modesto, California, it’s a case that continues to baffle a nation.

It was Christmas Eve 2002 when the 27-year-old mom-to-be, more than eight months into her pregnancy, vanished from her seemingly perfect life while walking the family dog. Initially, her husband, Scott Peterson, reported her as a missing person, and their families never suspected he had committed the crime.

So it came as a shock to many when Scott was charged in the disappearance – and ultimately the murder – of his wife. Police became suspicious of the fertilizer salesman due to inconsistencies in his stories, and his calm demeanor throughout the investigation.

From his rural idyll Pol Pot crony jeers at genocide trial

Despite the “Do not disturb” sign tied to the fence — written in English, a rarity in this tranquil Cambodian backwater — the old man in the wooden garden chair waved his unexpected visitors into his gated compound.

There is a good reason Meas Muth does not normally welcome the attention of foreigners. He is among the handful of former Khmer Rouge commanders to have been charged with genocide and crimes against humanity for the horrors of the Killing Fields.

Skulls lie exposed after the discovery of a mass grave south of Phnom Penh. The death toll under the Khmer Rouge is estimated at 1.7m peopleRICHARD VOGELRICHARD VOGEL

An estimated 1.7m Cambodians were murdered or died from starvation, disease and exhaustion in just four years after Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge leader, emptied the cities in 1975 to realise his fanatical vision of an agrarian utopia.

Behind the Confession That ‘Haunted’ Jeffrey MacDonald’s Murder Trial — and Why the Jury Never Heard It

Jeffrey MacDonald’s defense team is preparing to go to court, again, to argue for his innocence in the  murder of his family nearly 47 years ago.

His case was featured on Monday night’s season finale of People Magazine Investigates, on Investigation Discovery. As MacDonald’s lawyers explained on the People Magazine Investigates After Show following the episode, some evidence has stuck with them for years.

“Helena Stoeckley has haunted this case ever since she was discovered as a potential suspect,” defense attorney Hart Miles said on the after show, which is available to stream, along with the full episode, on People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN).

Miles referred to Stoeckley’s multiple confessions that she and three male intruders were at the MacDonald home the night his wife and two young children were killed. But prosecutors have long maintained MacDonald, a former

10 things we wouldn’t have if not for the OJ Simpson trial

Before 1994, O.J. Simpson’s greatest contributions to the culture were threefold: his record-breaking, award-winning career as a running back in college and professional football; his stint as a broadcaster and commercial pitchman, most notably running and hurdling through airports for Hertz rental cars; and as The Naked Gun films’ detective Nordberg, a victim of nonstop slapstick calamities.

Not bad. But when Simpson went on trial for allegedly murdering both his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman, the ensuing spectacle became an obsession — one with a profound, historic and occasionally bizarre the ripple effect on pop culture became profound.
